The Samsung Galaxy S3 And The New Nokia Lumia 900 – Design And Screen Quality Compared

Samsung Galaxy S3, Samsung Galaxy SIII, Galaxy S3
Nokia Lumia 900
This year we expect to see the Windows Mobile operating system challenge the Android platform more than ever before thanks to some excellent software improvements. The Nokia Lumia 900 is regarded by many as the leading Windows device on the market thanks to some excellent styling and superb specification. We compare this handset to the Samsung Galaxy S3, the brand new Android phone that replaces the best selling Galaxy S2. We take a look at styling and screen quality on both of the devices.

The Nokia Lumia 900 is one of the most eye catching devices currently available and therefore it easily outshines the Galaxy S3 for design. The model is similar in looks to the other Lumia handsets that are available although the materials used on this handset do feel more premium than on its sibling models. Rather than adopt the curved chassis used by many modern phones the Lumia 900 sports a much more angular design. The main body is made from a high quality polycarbonate material and its constructed from a single piece of this material which helps to make the phone feel very robust. In terms of dimensions the phone measures 127.8 x 68.5 x 11.5mm and weighs 160 grammes. The Samsung Galaxy S3 boast some super specification but unfortunately the design of the model is not quite as impressive. We would have liked to see the model sport similar styling to the very modern looking Galaxy S2 but Samsung have opted to use a more pebble like design that is similar to numerous other handsets. In a bid to keep the weight of the handset down to a minimum the phone uses a very lightweight plastic material. Although this enables the device to weigh just 133 grammes the material does not feel very robust in your hand which is a shame from a flagship model. Considering that this model sports a 4.7 inch display the physical dimensions are very good. The model has an incredible depth of just 8.6mm which makes it one of the slimmest devices on the market. In terms of styling the Lumia 900 easily eclipses its rivals thanks to great build quality and a modern design.

One area where the Samsung Galaxy S3 does gain the upper hand on its rival is for screen technology. The model features a large 4.7 inch screen which makes use of AMOLED technology to produce excellent image quality and good levels of brightness. The model is capable of displaying a resolution of 1280 x 720 which means that a superb pixel density of 306PPI is offered. The Nokia Lumia 900 uses a much smaller 4.3 inch screen which also makes use of AMOLED technology. The resolution displayed by this model is much lower than the Samsung at 800 x 480 pixels. This is still a very high standard and material does still look very impressive but the pixel density drops to just 217PPI. When you look at the two screens side by side there is more detail on the Samsung model while the viewing angles are also better.

The Nokia Lumia 900 and the Samsung Galaxy S3 are two of the leading handsets on their respective operating systems. The Lumia device boasts superior build quality and a more striking design but the Samsung handset does offer a larger and more impressive display perfect for web browsing and playback of multi media files.

Samsung Galaxy S3 Hands on experience first on net

The Samsung Galaxy S3 is certainly impressive. With a large, dazzling screen, super-fast quad-core processor, quality 8MP camera and expandable storage, it ticks all the key boxes for those looking for a truly feature-packed smartphone. Upon first impression, though, we're not totally blown away. This is mainly down to the slightly lacklustre plasticky design, though, and on a technical front it's up there with the best.

Key Features

  • 4.8in, 720 x 1280 pixel display
  • Quad Core 1.4GHz CPU
  • 8MP camera with 1080p video
  • Android 4.0 ICS with TouchWiz

Samsung Galaxy S3 - Design and Hardware
Samsung has literally taken something of a step backward with this handset's design, bearing as it does more resemblance to the original Samsung Galaxy S rather than the S2. In particular, the back is all curved glossy plastic rather than the squared-off chequered look of the S2 or Galaxy Nexus. The overall effect is a little underwhelming.

In terms of practicalities, though, we can have few complaints. While clearly not a ruggedised phone, it feels well put together and will no doubt prove to stand up to the rigours of everyday life, just as the similarly plasticky S2 did. Moreover, despite being a large phone (dimensions of .6 x 70.6 x 8.6mm) it sits reasonably comfortably in the hand thanks to nicely rounded corners, and the power button is conveniently placed on the right edge, rather than the top where you might have to stretch for it. Meanwhile the volume rocker is in its usual spot on the left.
Inevitably it's a bit of a stretch to reach all the whopping 4.8in screen, but then that's the same with all these big-screened smartphones. Also, despite its slenderness, it doesn't feel too unwieldy to handle – it's easy to get a good grip.

Paying homage to its predecessor, the Samsung Galaxy S2, the navigation buttons consist of a central physical Home button (Apple lawsuit beware) flanked by two touch-sensitive buttons, one for Back and one for bringing up the new Android 4.0 Multi-tasking menu. They seem responsive and easy to use.

Samsung Galaxy S3 - Screen
Some reports were suggesting the Galaxy S3 may feature a bonkers 1080p resolution display but unsurprisingly this isn't the case. Instead we have an essentially Samsung Galaxy Nexus matching 4.8in panel with an HD Ready resolution of 720 x 1,280 pixels. This gives it a pretty high pixel density of 303ppi, just a jot under the iPhone 4S's 326ppi. It looks amazing, packing in a huge amount of detail and making it great for web browsing.

Samsung Galaxy S3: already close to 10 million pre-ordered

In the span of just a few days, Samsung has already received nine million pre-orders for its new smartphone, the Galaxy S3, according to an article in  Korea Economic Daily published Friday.
According to Korea Economic Daily, the factory in charge of the production of the Galaxy S3 is working to its maximum capacity, finishing 5 million units per month. Samsung did not wish to comment on these figures, noted the Korean daily.

The Galaxy S2, the brand's current flagship smartphone, has sold more than 20 million units since its release a year ago. Its succesor, which is bigger (4.8 inch display), more powerful (1.4 GHz Exynos 4 Quadprocessor,) and more intelligent (responding to fingers, voice and eye-tracking), is in a good position to smash that figure.
