2010 Australian Open Round 1 Results: Dinara Safina Gets Past Magdalena Rybarikova in Straight Sets to Advance

Dinara Safina got her 2010 Australian Open off to a good start, getting past Magdalena Rybarikova in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 to move into the second round and keep her sights on her first Grand Slam singles title.

Safina managed to take the match based largely on the points she won off her first serve and her ability to handle Rybarikova’s serve. Safina won 74% of her first offerings to overcome nine double-faults and 39 unforced errors.

Safina has reached the finals of the French Open the last two years but fell to Ana Ivanovic in 2008 and then Svetlana Kuznetsova last year. In 2009 she reached the finals at the Australian Open but again fell, this time to Serena Williams. Despite never winning a Grand Slam singles title Safina reached the number one in the rankings on April 27, 2009 and is currently ranked second in the world.

Maria Kirilenko stunned Maria Sharapova in the opening round of the 2010 Australian Open, beating her fellow Russian in a three-set marathon 7-6 (7-4), 3-6, 6-4 to move into round two and keep her hopes of capturing her first Grand Slam singles title alive.

Kirilenko was aided in large part to Sharapova’s mistakes as the former world’s number one committed 11 double-faults en route to 77 unforced errors. While Sharapova won 70% of her first serves put in play that figure dropped to 40% on second serves as Kirilenko feasted on her miscues. Australian Open 2010 Round 1 Results: Andy Roddick Gets Past Thiemo de Bakker in Straight Sets to Move into Second Round

While Andy Roddick made his way into the second round at the Australian Open the American didn’t exactly use his typical power game to get past Thiemo de Bakker in the opening round. Instead, Roddick used a controlled tempo to dispatch de Bakker in straight sets 6-1, 6-4, 6-4.

Roddick managed just 7 aces in the match compared to 17 for de Bakker but he limited his unforced errors to just 25 compared to 43 from his opponent. Instead of trying to hammer his serve Roddick concentrated on accuracy and it paid off as he collected wins on 75% of his first serves put in play and didn’t see his serve broken in the match.
