For many it is a show of prestige. If you have won an Oscar you are a big thing in the film industry and people who have won it feel proud of it.

But it is not sure that a film that has done exceptionally well at the box office will win the prize.

Going by the box office response yardstick, Cameron should win the Oscars for his sci-fi film Avatar. But the billions of dollars that the film made at the box office are apparently not enough to ensure that it wins the award.
